La Trappe Quadrupel Oak Aged batch 53 has matured for two years in French whisky barrels. Although France is best known for its wine and cognac, the country also has more than forty distilleries that produce whisky of excellent quality. French whisky is distinguished by its refined character, strongly influenced by terroir – the combination of soil, climate and craftsmanship – and centuries-old distillation traditions. In general, it is more elegant and subtle than Scotch or Irish whisky, with a harmonious balance between fruity notes, spices and oak.
When pouring Batch 53, the fine, stable beige foam immediately catches the eye, with exceptionally small carbon dioxide bubbles. The colour is deep dark brown, considerably darker than the regular Quadrupel, a result of the long maturation.
The aroma is dominated by notes of vanilla and wood, supplemented by hints of honey, raisins, liquorice and candied fruit. The taste is full, round and soft, with a beautiful balance. The bitterness is subtle and fades into the background, while the finish is slightly sweet. As the beer warms up, the wood character subtly returns, without being overpowering.
