In the late 19th century, the blast furnaces of southeastern Ohio burned red-hot to smelt ore into iron. The Hope Furnace, just outside Athens County, operated from 1854 to 1874, producing 15 tons of iron per day. The building still stands today and inspired the biggest, richest, and most robust Barleywine Ale they've ever brewed. It was brewed with a massive amount of local maple syrup and aged for 26 months in some of their favorite bourbon barrels.
We (and especially Louise.O) absolutely love this Iron Furnace! It has a wonderfully prominent maple aroma, courtesy of the friends at Milligan's Maple Syrup, that blends seamlessly with the rich vanilla notes from a blend of Maker's and Heaven Hill barrels aged for 26 months.
